Being Green On The Cheap

Going green without spending green

We all know going green is the new buzz, and everyone should do their part to go down this pathway. What too many people believe is going green is a very expensive proposition and to go green you have got to spend green. I am here to tell you it isn't true at all. You can be just as green as the next person and it won't cost you a dime more.

I am living proof of this statement. I believe that one of the presidential candidates has said that the boundary between rich and poor is making five million dollars per year! I make significantly less than that, which means I'm poor. But, it also means that I am living a relatively green lifestyle and not spending a lot of money to do it.

I live in a small town, so I am able to walk just about anywhere I want to get to. I rarely use my car to get around, unless I have several errands to run or need to fill up the freezer with food. Biking works as well, if you need to go farther distances or there is a time constraint. Bikes can be purchased used at flea markets or even rummage sales for very little money.

Do you know what my basic house cleaner is? Vinegar and baking soda, combined with water. The vinegar kills bacteria, and the baking soda acts like an abrasive for sticky stuff. I do actually have a bottle of biodegradable dish soap, but I use it so infrequently that there is roughly a quarter of a bottle left, and this was purchased in January of 2008.

A broom and a dust pan still works just as good for cleaning floors, as it has for centuries. Although I do own an upright vacuum, I also own a manual carpet sweeper that I use about 90% of the time. I'll vacuum about four times per year, which means a three-pack of bags for the vac lasts me longer than I can remember.

Although I do have a very energy efficient portable washing machine (scroll down in product review archives to read about it) I always hand rinse and hang dry my clothes. It takes me 12 minutes a day to wash 4 items of clothing, and this way I always have clean clothes.

So, next time you hear someone tell you that going green costs too much, you tell them about the Green Guy, and the ways he is being green on the cheap.
