Another Earth Day. Another trip around the sun and another day of celebration for all that is good about this day and what it means, and to give thanks for all of you that are making it happen!
Biggest thanks go out to the President, Barack Obama, for including three top environmental scientists in his cabinet. They are considered a scientific dream team and are not afraid to speak their minds. If we want to get a handle on the environmental problems we are facing, especially global warming, denial of the problems needs to stop and problem solving needs to start. We are fortunate President Obama has appointed the best three in the business to get the job done.
Americans are doing their part to make this the best and most environmentally sound Earth Day in history. Why? Natural gas and coal use dropped almost two percent, and petroleum usage dropped nearly 37 percent! This happened because we are shifting towards alternative renewable forms of energy (and high gas prices didn’t hurt either). Even in this economy, alternative energy has experienced double digit growth figures! Keep up the good work.
As you have read about on this site, humpback whales, bald eagles, gray wolves and right whales have all been removed from the endangered species list. Florida manatees look like they are recovering, and while we have a ways to go, these are certainly some real success stories we can all feel good about.
Electric cars are no longer some hi-tech impractical wanna-be. They are real and they are going mainstream. The secret is the Lithium-ion battery packs that recharge quickly, are lightweight and can be molded into virtually any shape. This is the battery that has revolutionized the electric car industry, and virtually every major car company has or will have plans to put a bona fide usable electric car into production. Among others is the revolutionary Chevy Volt, which is slated for production next year and will be a forerunner of better things to come.
This is really just a short list of accomplishments, and I could go on and on about recycling figures going up, organic farmers and produce increasing and environmental schools being built to educate our kids in the ways of going green.
Every year being green takes on a little more meaning. We don’t need to have pesticides in our food, we don’t need to have plastics clogging our landfills, and we don’t need to have fossil fuels polluting our air. We have alternatives now, some as low-tech as organic farming, some as high-tech as solar panels and wind farms, and some just as common sense like reusing a glass or a cup instead of throwing away a plastic bottle.
This year, many companies have honored Earth Day by offering eco-friendly and green promotions, and here on BecauseAction we wanted to highlight just a few of them.
The website YOOX is offering YOOXYGEN, an eco-friendly initiative that intends to develop its users' environmental awareness by partnering with other members of its field, such as artists and designers. The best part of this offer is the statement by the company that this is just the beginning, and they have plans to go even more green in the future!
April has been declared "PayItGreen Month" by the website PayItGreen, which encourages people to save paper whenever possible. A simple switch to paperless banking and direct deposit payment reduces waste and deforestation, protects water and has countless other benefits for the earth as well! According to PayItGreen, "If employees signed up to use Direct Deposit, individually they would save almost a pound of paper every year. In fact, if every employee who had access to Direct Deposit used it, we would save an additional 11 million pounds of paper, four million gallons of gas and avoid releasing 32 million pounds of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere each year."
A vital aspect of going green is going organic, which is easier than ever now, thanks to the newest promotion of organic food in mainstream supermarkets. With stores like Publix and Food Lion offering organic brands, you can do all of your shopping in one trip, saving yourself time and trouble, and you will be eating more healthy, less processed food!
We should always consider Earth Day a day of celebration, a day of hope and a day of love. Because Action speaks louder than words, we are changing the face of this planet for the better, and that’s something we all need to be proud of. It’s happening all over, and all of you Because Action subscribers should pat yourselves on the back! I know I am incredibly thankful to be a part of it all.
