Truth be told, my first introduction to all natural products came when I tried some of Newman’s Own salad dressing. I was hooked! This was even before I realized this was more of a charitable adventure than a money-making product for Mr. Paul Newman himself. I was stunned to hear that, after taxes, all profits go to charitable organizations, and to date, more than 200 million dollars have been donated. That is a lot of salad dressing, to be sure.
OK, so enter Nell Newman, Paul’s daughter. She actually one-upped her father by marketing Newman’s Own Organics, which are certified organic by the Oregon Tilth. No artificial fertilizers have been used for over 3 years on any farms that supply raw materials for Newman’s Own Organics, and they are even certified as Kosher by the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America. Ya gotta like that!
Nell’s products range from snacky type things like pretzels, cookies and the divine Fig Newman’s, and they even make an organic pet food! That’s right, even your dog or kitty can eat right and feel good about doing it too! Plus, all things Newman are pretty much available in most large department type food stores, as well as the local Co-Op.
The reality to all of this: Paul and Nell Newman pretty much jump-started mainstream natural and organic food promotion and production. Sure, it had been around for as long as humans, but getting someone Like Mr. Newman and his daughter to commit to doing something like this on such a large scale virtually brought natural food alternatives into everyone’s life. That’s not to say that we all should forego local organic producers out there for a Newman brand, but lets not forget to patronize these products where it all began. Besides, they make a killer salsa, and give me a pack of Fig Newman’s and I am in HEAVEN!
